Pasadena’s Fall Calendar of Festivals, Golf and Community Events

Look at a Pasadena community calendar for September through mid-November and a pattern shows up fast: the season has events at a familiar set of local venues. The calendar includes a county park at the tip of the peninsula, a volunteer fire company on Fort Smallwood Road, a 93-year-old bayfront property a few miles south, and a golf course that hosts charity tournaments. It also includes events at a community park and a high school, while a neighborhood bar fills in the gaps. Knowing where each event is happening makes the calendar easier to follow.

The Park End of the Peninsula

Downs Park, officially John H. Downs Memorial Park, sits on 236 acres of county land where the peninsula meets the Chesapeake Bay, and it already opened this fall's calendar. On September 5, the park hosted Pops in the Park, a free outdoor concert built around the America250 theme, with a guest appearance from Maryland Poet Laureate Lady Brion performing alongside an orchestral reading of Copland's Lincoln Portrait. It's the kind of program that only a county-run amphitheater space can pull off on short notice and at no charge, and it's a reminder that Downs Park's role in the fall calendar isn't incidental. The park has more than five miles of paved trail, a fishing pier, a dog beach, and an amphitheater built specifically for concerts like this one.

The park isn't done for the season. On November 7, Downs Park hosts the Downs Park 5 Miler, the seventh leg of the Annapolis Striders Championship Series, a loop course on the paved trails starting and finishing at the Fernwood Pavilion. Advance registration runs $15 through November 1, race-day sign-up is $25, and strollers aren't permitted on the course. Getting into the park at all requires the standard $6 per vehicle daily fee that Anne Arundel County charges at all its regional parks, though military families with ID get in free.

The Firehouse Nobody Skips

If Downs Park is the peninsula's public commons, the Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire Company is its private engine room, and it runs two of the fall's bigger draws. RBVFC has served the Pasadena area since 1931, staffed entirely by volunteers, and its fall calendar starts with the Kids Market at the RBVFC Fall Fest on September 20, a family vendor event on the company's own grounds on Fort Smallwood Road.

The bigger one comes three weeks later. On October 10, the company hosts the Riviera Beach Music Festival at Riviera Beach Community Park, running 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. with a mix of local and national acts. Every ticket goes toward equipment and training for an all-volunteer department, and the event is partnered with Bravo Emergency Services Team, a local veteran-owned restoration company that provides 24/7 property damage response after fires, floods, and storms. It's a fundraiser wearing a festival's clothes, which is a pattern worth remembering as you look at the rest of this list.

Kurtz's Beach Runs Two Festivals of Its Own

Kurtz's Beach has operated as a bayfront gathering spot on Kurtz Avenue since 1933, and while most of its calendar is private, weddings, reunions, celebrations of life, it opens its 20-acre field to the public twice this fall. The Made in Maryland Festival returned on September 13, a state-themed event with local vendors, artisans, and live entertainment that benefits the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the nonprofit that funds watershed improvement work across the bay and its tributaries. On October 17, the venue hosts the Wine Festival at Kurtz's Beach, running 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with local wineries pouring on the same grounds where couples get married most weekends of the year.

What's notable is how much of Kurtz's public-facing calendar is tied to a cause rather than just an open house.

Three September Tournaments at Compass Pointe

Compass Pointe Golf Courses, off Fort Smallwood Road, is where the charity calendar gets dense fast. Two 18-hole courses spread across 800 acres, built in 2003, with a clubhouse restaurant called Bogey's Grill anchoring the property. In September alone this year, the course hosted three tournaments: the PBA Annual Golf Tournament on September 10, the ninth annual Joshua Roach Memorial Golf Tournament on September 23, and the fourteenth annual Larry Spitzer Golf Tournament on September 24. The season's biggest tournament, the third annual Pearl Classic, tees off October 24.

Across a full calendar year, Pasadena hosts eight charity golf tournaments and Compass Pointe is the only course that runs them, which means the venue functions less like a single golf club and more like the peninsula's default fundraising fairway. If you know someone who plays in one of these, chances are it's not their first.

Here's How the Whole Season Lines Up

Date Event Venue
Sept 5 (past) Pops in the Park Downs Park
Sept 10 (past) PBA Annual Golf Tournament Compass Pointe
Sept 13 (past) Made in Maryland Festival Kurtz's Beach
Sept 20 (past) Kids Market @ RBVFC Fall Fest Riviera Beach VFC
Sept 23 (past) Joshua Roach Memorial Golf Tournament Compass Pointe
Sept 24 Larry Spitzer Golf Tournament Compass Pointe
Oct 10 Riviera Beach Music Festival Riviera Beach Community Park
Oct 17 Wine Festival at Kurtz's Beach Kurtz's Beach
Oct 24 Pearl Classic Golf Tournament Compass Pointe
Nov 7 Downs Park 5 Miler Downs Park
Nov 14 Fall Craft Fair Chesapeake High School

Laid out this way, the season reads less like a random list of things to do and more like a rotation. Events at the featured venues are spread across the season, making it easier to see what's happening and where.

The Other Regulars

Two more names round out the fall without carrying their own section. Twain's Tavern on Baltimore Annapolis Boulevard keeps a steady live music calendar running most weekends, the kind of neighborhood bar where you check the lineup before you decide whether it's worth going out. And Chesapeake High School on Mountain Road closes the season on November 14 with its annual Fall Craft Fair, a shift from fire company grounds and golf fairways to the school gym, and a reminder that the peninsula's biggest public building does its own share of the hosting once the weather turns.

Planning Around the Rotation

A few things are worth knowing before you circle dates on a calendar:

  • The Riviera Beach Music Festival and the Wine Festival at Kurtz's Beach sit exactly one week apart, October 10 and October 17, both requiring tickets purchased in advance rather than at the gate.
  • Downs Park's daily vehicle fee applies even if you're just there for the 5 Miler or a Saturday walk, so an annual pass pays for itself quickly if the park is part of your regular routine.
  • Compass Pointe's charity tournaments are typically private outings with a registered field, not spectator events, so the Pearl Classic on October 24 is one to support by sponsoring or playing, not by showing up to watch.
  • If you're new to the fire company's calendar, RBVFC's own site keeps the most current ticket links and parking details for the Music Festival, since street parking is limited and premium onsite parking sells separately.

None of this is a coincidence and none of it needs to be complicated once you see the shape of it. The venues take turns, the school closes out the season, and a neighborhood bar fills in the gaps. That's a Pasadena fall.

If you're already circling these dates, you already know what makes this stretch of the county worth paying attention to.
